Thank you all for your help.
A bit of further research has turned up the 1797 Birth Record for George.
Transcript as follows:
1798
24th May
John Hogg & Jean Blair in Upper Balfour had a Son baptised, called George, witnesses George Hogg & Samuel Rough both in Rorandel
For some reason the "H" was dropped from the surname when the family moved to Aberdeen.
I have located photos of Upper Balfour & the hamlet at Rorandel - it looks like beautiful country, about as different as can be to where I live on .. .

The booklet "The Kirkyard of Monymusk", published by the Aberdeen & North-East Scotland Family History Society, contains details of gravestones. It includes four references to the family name "Ogg" and one to "Herd". A visit to the Kirkyard should be instructive... .

Excellent info, they must be referring to the Ton bridge then as you need to cross that to get to Kemnay. It's about a mile away.. don't know why I didn't think of it before!.. .

According to the "Illustrated Architectural Guide to Gordon" (Ian Shepherd) it should read 'From the Bridge One Mile by Ye (pronounced 'the', by the way- the old symbol for 'th' was written by as a single symbol that happens to look like the modern 'y') Young Buffs 1754'
It refers to the regiment quartered at Monymusk House after Culloden, who had the task of improving the road to Kemnay... .

Looks really good.. there used to be a calendar here but it wasn't as good (also it was a bit broken). Perhaps this should go on the front page as a permanent feature? If you FTP it up with the same name it would be very easy to make it a permanent on the front page... .
