From the bridge, one mile.
Located a few hundred meters from Monymusk house traveling towards Kemnay and right on the roadside is this curious stone dated 1754. The inscription reads "FROM THE BRIDGE ONE MILE BY YE YOUNG BWFFS 1754"
There is no bridge one mile from there in any direction unless you count the Enzean bridge but that was constructed in the 40'
s by POWs. Any ideas?

Enquiry about mile stone
According to the "Illustrated Architectural Guide to Gordon" (Ian Shepherd) it should read '
From the Bridge One Mile by Ye (pronounced '
the'
, by the way- the old symbol for '
th'
was written by as a single symbol that happens to look like the modern '
y'
) Young Buffs 1754'
It refers to the regiment quartered at Monymusk House after Culloden, who had the task of improving the road to Kemnay.

Excellent info, they must be referring to the Ton bridge then as you need to cross that to get to Kemnay. It'
s about a mile away.. don'
t know why I didn'
t think of it before!
